Tomorrow is my blood test. All weekend I have been considering if I should pee on a stick (POAS aka home pregnancy test). Last year, I didn't and was relieved that I hadn't. I think the early pregnancy symptoms (although intermittent) that I have had make me want to know. Ultimately, I decided not to take a home test. The home pregnancy tests are either positive (there is above 20 mIU/mL) or negative. At doctor's offices they can often detect HCG levels of 5-10. The blood test I will get tomorrow will give me an exact number. I believe we are hoping for well over 50 if not nearly 100. So, if I took the home pregnancy test and got a positive, it would not mean that from an IVF pregnancy everything is going right. That's ultimately why I am waiting.
I test tomorrow-results in the afternoon. Then, I will have a follow up Blood HCG test on Thursday and then again the following week. In a healthy pregancy the HCG level should double every 2 days. That's why IVF clinics need the blood test level instead of the yes/no of a urine test.
I have been reading Nourishing Traditions - Book of Baby and Child Care. It is fascinating how much diet (as in food and nutrition choices) play a role. Many "go-to" medical recommendations are not reflective of the actual numbers in research. I have seen recommendations to eat cereal fortified with B vitamins during pregnancy versus eating a kiwi and an egg. My current favorite recommendation has been the coconut oil- 4 TBS per day! As my week progressed I went from want coffee, drinking half and throwing out the rest to not even viewing coffee (in any form) as an option. Nourishing traditions recommended 1-2 Tbs of coconut oil in hot water so that has replaced my coffee. The Zulay milk frother blends it really nicely and I have been enjoying that.
I am trying a new prenatal vitamin. I had been on Baby and Me 2 which is a really good product. It just seems like there are extra minerals in it that after almost 2 years on prenatals I don't need. I am trying the Nordic Naturals version. They also have a stellar prenatal DHA and I trust their quality. Ok, this is probably enough nervous random factoids for today. I plan to share the test results in a quick post late afternoon.
