Day 5 - another 9 hours of sleep. Dr. Kim says I need the extra sleep because of the work my endocrine system is doing. Shots are good. The HCG makes me sleepy and forgetful (think pregnancy brain). The follistim adds to my stomach bloat. I look like I may have a baby bump starting but it is my ovaries plumping up.
Genetic Testing- I received the consent form for the embryo genetic testing today. Many clinics have the couple get genetic testing prior to starting the IVF journey. Somehow, this got skipped for us and when we realized it, we didn't want to postpone further to wait for testing results. We are choosing to do the embryo testing instead. This cycle we should have enough embryos to test. The process is fairly intensive and the clinic aims to "batch" at least 5 embryos for testing.
The plan is retrieve upwards of 10 healthy, mature eggs. Fertilize them with hubby's frozen sperm. The embryology team will monitor the embryos' growth over 1-2 days. If everything looks good with multiple embryos the team matures the embryos to day 5. At day 5 the cells have matured to blastocyst stage where the cells that become the placenta are differentiated from the cells that become the baby. For the genetic testing a few cells from the placent side are biopsied and sent to a different lab.
The lab detects if the 23 chromosomes are normal and present. Issues at this stage account for over 20% of miscarriages in women my age. This testing isn't perfect as we experienced last year, however, it does help to make sure that the embryos we transfer (or implant) are the healthiest ones.
