When I first signed the consent form, I could only take in what applied to me. The second time through there is a lot more to consider.
Under IVF Process, Risk and Consent it says
-The success of IVF largely depends on growing several eggs at once (this is where I previously struggled)
-Injections of the natural homrons FSH and LH (gonadotropins) are used for this purpose (more on these after April 1st when I will be starting them. Oh shoot I have to call the specialty pharmacy and order these...that day is sneaking up on me. If I time it right I should be able to use some of the meds for round 4 and 5, otherwise I would already have purchased them.
-Other medications are used to keep ovulation from happening too soon (this was definitely the case my first round- with stress, over exercise and over work my body naturally ovulated several eggs).
-Sometimes the ovaries respond too strongly - and sometimes not enough. (so far I am in the not enough category. I had a large ovarian cyst in 2020 which required surgery. My right ovary had 1-3 follicles on which the eggs mature while my left had 10-12). The follicle size is what the clinic measures via ultrasound to determine how mature the eggs are and when to time the egg retrieval.
Woo- this is getting long, glad it is Sunday! The medications I am currently on are Estradiol and Testosterone. I take estradiol (2mg pills) twice a day and the testosterone cream (very cool deodorant like dispensor - 6 clicks) every morning. The clinic gives a range of optimal time, typical 6 AM-10 AM and 6PM- 10 PM to take the medicine. The more consistent your timing the more effective and fewer side effects.
For Estradiol-it can be taken in several forms, side effects: nausea and risk of bloods clots or stroke. I would also add headaches to this list. I get a hormone headache 2-3 hours after taking this medication. It's like clock work. If I stay extra hydrated, and for the morning dose have caffeine, the headache is less intense. The headaches for me are worst within the first 1-3 days of starting a medication. (part of the reason for shorter posts the last 2 days) This type of headache mirrors the sinus headache with a dash of menstrual migraine feeling. It's not so terrible that I have to lay down but I sure am irritable, short tempered, and cognitively not as high-functioning as usual.
For testosterone- Used to increase the number of growing eggs for 1-3 months before ovarian stimulation. Side effects are listed - I have experienced forgetfullness, increased sex drive, difficulty concentrating, interrupted sleep and edginess. Basically, I have more understanding and respect for teenage boys. I have a specific amount of testosterone at a specific time- they can get testosterone dumps at any time of day.
I have also been taking CoQ10- which is probably good since the estradiol can increase blood clot and stroke risk. CoQ10 (200 mg, 3 times per day) - can improve egg quality. This was one of 3 major changes I made between my first and second cycles. I went from 1 egg in the first cycle to 9 in the second cycle.
It's too bad none of the hormones help with weight loss. I am up 20 pounds since I started the IVF medications this time last year. I may not have worked the last 2 weeks but I did not find the energy to walk or do yoga daily like I hoped. I have been sleeping 9-10 hours and feeling the need for afternoon naps. I have not been productive and have larger to-do list than when I started my medical leave. My husband says it's ok and has offered to take on more. It is ok, I get to choose to not sweat the small stuff. Emails will get sent, bills will get paid, kitchens will get clean, laundry probably won't get folded- please excuse the wrinkles!
This is a season of grace and growth for me. My ability to have children truly rests in the success of IVF in the next few months. Some of you may see a side of me you have never really seen. I think this is the beginning of the shift in mindset that comes with being a parent. My priority right now is my health and my future babies, not seeing more patients, making more money, not running long distance, not lifting heavy and not keeping the house spotless.
