My locals page and all social media is basically a fresh start. The last year has been difficult to post about and brought several changes which I plan to cover as I share my journey. Posts will range from my experiences both medical and emotional and lots in between. I hope that by sharing my journey I can bring healing to others undergoing fertility treatments. I also hope that my posts can bring insights to the family and friends of those going through fertility treatments. When talking with my mom after yesterday's "post-trigger" fertility appointment there are so many questions she had never asked. She stated that with the sensitivity of fertility treatments and hormones, she hasn't truly known how to support me. So, without further delay...
I am Rachel. I am a self employed physical therapist, wife and step mom. I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. I have always wanted to be a mom. My husband and I have been undergoing fertility treatments (In-vitro fertilization or IVF) for 1 year. This post is mostly about today's procedure.
This morning I had my 3rd egg retrieval of my fertility journey. My morning started early with quite a bit of abdominal pressure as my ovaries had been working the last 10 days to produce plump follicles with as many mature eggs as possible. After some traffic, my husband and I arrived at our fertility clinic. We had a consult with the doctor and then the anesthesiologist. My husband went to wait and the nurse took me to get ready.
Socks, hairnet, paper gown open in the back, robe open in the front and I was ready. The nurse guided me into the OR, hips on the edge of the table and legs in the boot stirrups. Trust me, these are far more comfortable than typical stirrups! After the ID check with the embryologist, the anesthesiologist quickly had me in dream land. I woke up in the recovery room chair. Now I only know this because I have done two prior retrievals, I actually was helped off the table and into a wheelchair. Then was taken down the hall and did a transfer into the chair I woke up in. So thank you anesthesia!
The abdominal pain was a worse this time but tolerable with the heating pad. Fortunately, my husband was brought back to be with me. He has been a great support and, as a chiropractor, a HUGE blessing for the hormone headaches. This morning though I felt angry waking up, so I pretended to still be sleeping. My husband received all the post op instructions and then helped me with eating the snack. Well, he actually fed me the snacks because it made me smile. If I am laughing he knows he is safe from the hormones! Then we wait.
Any woman who has gone through IVF knows this is really one of the dreaded waits of the process. You wait to hear how many eggs your body produced and your doctor retrieved. Fortunately, my clinic doesn't wait too long. Seven. I had 7 eggs. It's not terrible, but I had over 10 follicles! I did hear my main physician's voice in the hallway and asked if he was available. I cannot over-emphasize how important it is to have a doctor and team you trust when going through IVF. Really any medical journey, but definitely with IVF. My doctor stopped in and was encouraging about my results. We would know how many eggs fertilized tomorrow.
My vitals were all normal and I finished my snacks. Time to change. My clinic sends your partner in to help you since you just had anesthesia. I strongly recommend that after you disrobe, sit on the toilet. Using the toilet as a seat is by far the easiest and safest way to get your pants and shoes on. Once in the car I started to drink electrolytes. This is a super important part of recovering from egg retrieval. Then I napped for an hour. Pro tip- have a heating pad on stand by. This really helps with pain relief and recovery. After some delicious food and a second nap I sat down to write.
